What is the Ozil goal AI trend?
Updated:
Short answer
It is a meme that re-stages Mesut Özil’s 2016 Champions League winner against Ludogorets with someone else in his place, such as a dinosaur or a grandmother, using AI. The edits spread from early October 2026, and USA Today covered them on 19 October. Ozil Goal AI lets you make one from your own photo.
The real goal
On 1 November 2016, Arsenal visited Ludogorets in Sofia, Bulgaria, for a Champions League group game. Arsenal were 2–0 down and came back to win 3–2.
In the 87th minute Mesut Özil went through alone. He lifted the ball over the goalkeeper, left the chasing defenders sliding past and pushed the ball into an empty net. That goal is the one the meme copies.
How the AI version spread
From early October 2026, people began using AI video tools to replace Özil with other characters. Common swaps include a T-rex, other dinosaurs, a grandmother and characters from games.
The clips collected millions of views, and USA Today reported on the trend on 19 October 2026. We quote no exact view counts, because they change and differ between platforms.
What stays the same in every version
- A long ball over the defence and a run at goal alone.
- One calm touch that lifts the ball over the keeper.
- Two defenders who slide in and miss.
- A tap into an empty net and a calm celebration.
